CREATURES OF COMFORT
If New York is an urban jungle, this is what the wild things wear. After developing a large following with an e-commerce site and then in Los Angeles, Creatures of Comfort owner Jade Lai has set up shop in Nolita. Occupying the former police precinct on Mulberry Street, the CofC “habitat” features 2,300 square feet of high ceilings and naked wood. The backbone of inventory is made up of serious casual wear for men and women by fashion luminaries like Martin Margiela, Rick Owens, and Maria Cornejo. Lai is also known for scouting rising fashion talents, showcasing eclectic pieces by Rachel Comey, Tom Scott, Michelle Lane, and Mary Ping. And then there are the oddities: housewares, furniture, art, and globally sourced knickknacks. Think lip balm from Paris, candy and furniture from Japan, accessories from Morocco, and more. Come on a weekend and sway to the acoustic folk-rock soundscape as you ponder new furs and skins.
